The below code snippet is a ready to use code for removing null or empty tags from XML document.

Consider the below XML input.xml. This contains a null tag phone.


Now, we apply the below xslt to the above xml document. This would remove the empty xml tag from input.xml. You can use tools like xmlspy or notepad++ to execute xslt over a given xml document:
